TECHNOLOGY ASPECTS
Digital Dentistry & Digital Technologies
Digital dentistry involves any dental technology or device that incorporates digital or computer-controlled components instead of mechanical or electrical.
Digital technologies and digital dentistry have significantly benefited patients by reducing the treatment time, enhancing precision, and improving the treatment outcome. They also improve the clinician's communication with his patients, lab technicians, and his associates. Improved communication, especially visual communication, enhances diagnostic accuracy and treatment plans and significantly improves patients' treatment acceptance.
Intraoral Scanner
An intraoral scanner captures direct optical impressions by projecting a light source onto the area to be scanned. An imaging sensor captures the images. A scanning software processes these images, producing a 3D surface model. You get digital impressions of the patient's oral cavity; thus, intraoral scanners remove the need for conventional impression trays.
Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)
A Cone-beam CT is a rotating X-ray machine that provides a 3D view of teeth, jaw bones and oral anatomy. It also identifies oral conditions that are not easily detected by regular X-ray procedures. CBCT imaging is of great help while planning procedures, such as bone grafting, in areas of less bone availability.
Computer-Aided Design/ Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and 3D Printing
CAD/ CAM and 3D printing have made restorative dentistry and esthetic dentistry easier and effective for practitioners. They can now design and manufacture dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and veneers and deliver them to the patients on the same day. Traditionally, a dental laboratory would make these restorations, and the process would take a week or more. The new technology enables the patient to receive the final restoration within a day.
One major limitation of digital dentistry is the cost involved. Technology is evolving rapidly, and to adopt every newly emerging technology requires a higher capital investment. This is exactly where Rich Smile Design (RSD) comes to your help. Start integrating digital workflows in your practice without having to worry about expensive technologies.
